Out in the Somme

Sir John Monash Centre, Villers–Bretonneux, Pozieres, Le Hamel….

Visit the new Sir John Monash Centre and see the beauty of the Somme! This day tour takes you south-west from Arras down through the scenic and rolling hills of the Somme and Villers-Bretonneux where we will spend the morning. In the afternoon we move into selected areas of the Battle of the Somme.

The Battle of the Somme belongs to the “brutal learning period of 1916” where much had to be learned about modern warfare, the allied losses in the first day of this Battle were staggering. This contrasts to the allied battles of 1918 where, after stopping the massive German thrust known as Operation Michael, the Germans were driven back so convincingly, that they knew it was all over.

The Out in the Somme Day Tour runs every Monday and Thursday, other days are available on request.
