I have been waiting to do this for a long time. After reading ‘Fromelles’ the Australian storey and the discovery of the graves at Pheasant Wood, I had to go to that place where so many Young Australian diggers fell. Phil and Aurore made this happen for us and it was an experience of a lifetime. We covered an incredible area over the three days and we were able to build a picture of how many of the battles played out. It was informative, exciting, depressing, inspiring and overall a very emotional tour. Thank you to all the staff at Sacred Tours. I may just be back soon.

We spent the day touring Australian sites at the Somme. Phil had a fantastic knowledge of world war 1 and continually kept you intrigued. Phil provided us with a wealth of information, some of which is considered unknown to Australians. At the beginning of the tour we were asked of our family background, allowing the tour to be tailored to our personal history- an appreciated touch. We would happily recommend this tour to everyone and is a day we will remember!

We booked a 2 day World War 1 Battle Field tour with Sacred Grounds, run by Phil an expat Sydney Beaches Aussie and his fabulous team. We had the option of 1,2 or 3 days travelling in small mini vans with 6-8 other interested parties and chose the 2 day tour. Beginning in the Somme after being picked up at 9am and visiting all the key sites of battle and memorials. Finishing back at our B&B at around 6pm. Phil is a terrific bloke who makes learning and listening to the history easy and informative. Day 2 was a longer day beginning at 9am and finishing in Belgium at Ypres, the Menin Gate where the tour ends with a Last Post tribute from 3 horn players. The town is closed off at 8 pm each night for this tribute to those Aussie Diggers that came so far and fought so far for these people who have said they will “Never forget the Australians”…..and that don’t. This day includes a pay your own meal in a restaurant of Phills choice which was terrific. I wholeheartedly recomend this trip be it 1,2 or 3 days. You will have fun, learn and get a feel for the horror our troops endured and the respect in which they are remembered in this most beautiful part of the world.

Excellent one day tour with Phil and Aurore of WWI battlefield sites and memorials on the Somme, focussing on Australian ones. Small group, two minivans, about 11 in group. All Australians. Phil a character, engaging and knowledgable. Aurore enthusiastic and bubbly. Both attentive and accommodating. Saw several places have read a lot about. Most striking things for me were seeing the actual ground, contours and landscape, and the small scale of the battlefields – e.g., only about 500 metres from Windmill to Moquet Farm yet Australians couldn’t take it, despite many attacks in 1916. A very satisfying day for an amateur military historian.

I used Sacred Ground Tours for their 3 day battlefield tour (8-10 Nov) and the shuttle service to the Armistice Centenary Commemoration Service at Villers Bretonneux (11 Nov). Across the 3 day tour our group had Aurore, Phil and Bruce as guides. All were incredibly knowledgeable with different styles, but all very passionate about WW1. I was blown away by the futility of this war and the incredible loss of life for very limited gains on either side and today it seems we have learned nothing!!

It is a lot to pack into each day and I was really tired (probably more emotionally than physically) at the end of the tour. Phil will do whatever he can to make this a positive experience for you – he organised tickets for us to go and see the Peter Jackson documentary “They Shall Grow Not Old” as part of the Arras Film Festival and sourced sandwiches and water so that we would not go hungry during the film as it ran across dinner time. I would not hesitate to recommend Phil and his crew for their knowledge, passion and friendly approach.

If I could make a couple of suggestions, it would be to try and allow more time at Sir John Monash Centre as it really needs a couple of hours in my opinion. Also to ensure time at Musee Jean and Denise Letaille in Bullecourt – this museum was so personal, it really hits home as to the impacts of this terrible war on individuals.

Our tour guide (Peter), was so informed, providing many facts and anecdotes: We even had some ‘bonus’ stops due to where our conversation and questions took us. From the Australian perspective, it was a huge history lesson. So insightful, informative, and almost a pilgrimage. Thanks so much to Peter, who gave us a day we will NEVER forget.

Fantastic battlefield tours organisation. Professional and extremely well put together itineraries that are personalized in a way that not many others can. Phil and Aurora were our guides for a two day visit of the Somme and Australian specific sites in the Flanders region that was both informative and deeply moving. Both guides demonstrated exceptional depth of knowledge and had to be on the ball full time navigating the myriad of small back roads that criss-cross this very complex area of battlefields and cemeteries. These tours give you an insight into the tragic events of 1914-18 in a way that just isn’t possible on a self guided expedition or with a much larger group than can be taken around in the small buses of Sacred Ground Tours.

Two totally different personalities made for an exceptional experience. Phil is typical Aussie through and through which is extremely comforting in it’s own way whilst Aurora is typically charming French. Both have an exceptional knowledge and were honest in their ability to answer questions and provide accurate information. The personal touch of being able to tailor an itinerary to visit the graves of tour participants relatives or significant sites is invaluable and much appreciated. Email communication with Phil prior to touring was prompt and easy and tour pick ups and drop offs to hotels or train stations etc was well organised.
Great cafe lunches were provided on both days and the tours are exceptional value and quality when considering how much effort and attention to detail is put into each day. Advice would definitely be to engage the services of a smaller group guided tour so as to gain the absolute most from the battlefields experience and Sacred Ground Tours can be highly recommended without hesitation. Thanks to Phil and Aurora for two unforgettable days.

My partner and I visited the Western Front recently, booking the tour with Sacred Ground Tours. What a great one day tour of the Western Front. Peter was a sensational tour guide with so much knowledge of the “Australian story”. Every Australian should visit this area and Sacred Ground Tours definitely have the details.
