Phil and his tours are a must-do for anybody who has interest in Australian war involvement. His knowledge is first-class, and his passion is unparalleled. Not to mention, he’s a joy of a tour guide that was hilarious, always up for a chat or any questions, and made the entire day both moving and extremely enjoyable.
My father and I are both huge history-buffs, and loved every second – signed up for another tour before the day was even over!

I cannot recommend Phil and his tours any more highly. Phil’s knowledge of WW1 is exceptional and he is passionate about Australia’s involvement and successes. The efforts he made locate the approx. burial places (on the battlefield) where my 2 great uncles were killed, and then take me there, were appreciated more than words can express.
Phil – the poem you read at Bullecourt was special and quite moving- thanks heaps.

I was recommended to take this tour as my Grandfather fought at Pozieres and I wanted to really understand what happened. Phil is incredibly knowledgable and informative and took the time to explain the cause if the war and the order of battles and their outcomes. We visited Commonwealth graves, battle sites and museums and each time we stopped Phil would explain what happened there. If you are interested in WW1 and the Western Front I cannot recommend Sacred Ground Tours enough best tour I have taken ever!

We booked our tour with Phil after reading other reviews and we were so happy we did. Phil picked us up from our hotel in Lille, and we spent a full day with Phil touring the northern France battlefields and memorials as well as Belgium including Tyne Cot and the Menin Gate. We had a relative’s grave we wanted to visit and Phil had done his research and took us to the cemetery so could we visit this grave. Overall a very moving day where we learnt a great deal about our history. Great finish to the day with a nice meal in Ypres and witnessing the Last Post at the Menin Gate. Thanks so much Phil.

Did a two day Australian war tour with Phil and Mathilda from Sacred Ground Tours. They possessed such in depth knowledge which not only informed me of the intrinsic nature of battles fought on the Western Front, but the emotion it carried with me.

Arriving on a very wet and cold day in Arras did not bode well. BUT we had 2 wonderful days with Faye seeing the Western Front. Faye is Canadian and this really enriched our understanding of the dynamics of the BEF on the Western Front. She was very professional, very knowledgable and so enthusiastic to share her knowledge it made these tours some of the best we have ever undertaken. Her understanding of the Australian contribution to these horrendous battlefields was excellent. We so enjoyed her company as well. Would recommend Sacred Ground tours highly. A fantastic experience. Thank you to Phil and to Faye

We met Phil during a tour of the Somme battlefield sites in northern France. As a passionate amateur historian who has studied the Australian contribution to the Great War extensively, finally getting to see and experience the Somme was a sombre but fascinating experience. Phil Hora’s knowledge of the battles, the various allied and enemy forces, their deployments and especially his incredible sense of spatial place and dimension made the time spent at Somme even more worthwhile. I will always be grateful to Phil for his generously provided time and knowledge. If you are an Aussie, Canuk, Kiwi or Pom I would urge you to go to the Somme to “understand” a little better what our incredible forbears suffered and achieved. It will make you sad and proud in equal measures. if you do I would urge you, if possible, to use Phil’s fantastic tour service to do so, he is as we say in Australia “a bloody good bloke who knows his stuff!”
